Harry Potter Cake School - the icing on the cake!

Ysgol Gacennau HarrI Potter Sir Ddinbych yw’r gystadleuaeth pobi eitha’, lle mae pobyddion ifanc angerddol yn cystadlu i gael eu coroni’n ‘Seren Bobydd’ gyffredinol holl ysgolion Sir Ddinbych. Ac, yr wythnos diwethaf, am y tro cyntaf erioed, croesawodd Ysgol Uwchradd Dinbych bobyddion ifanc o ysgolion cynradd ac uwchradd y Sir i frwydro drwy gyfrwng pobi.

Drwy gydol Tymor y Gwanwyn a'r Haf 2017, mae pobyddion ifanc o ysgolion ledled Sir Ddinbych wedi gwisgo eu ffedogau ac wedi profi eu sgiliau pobi, eu creadigrwydd a’u medr, mewn ymgais i gyrraedd yr Ysgol Gacennau Harry Potter i ddod o hyd i bobydd ifanc gorau'r Sir.

Thema’r gystadleuaeth eleni oedd Harri Potter, er anrhydedd 20fed pen-blwydd cyhoeddi 'Harri Potter a Maen yr Athronydd'.  Mae’r pobyddion ifanc wedi archwilio a datblygu sgiliau pwrpasol ac ymarferol ac wedi plesio pawb drwy 'chwipio i fyny' danteithion pobi ‘spellbindingly blasus’ ac iach, gan seilio eu ‘Gwaith Pobi Syfrdanol’ a’u bisgedi sinsir addurniedig ar eu hoff cymeriadau yn nofel gyntaf JK Rowling.

Yn yr Ysgol Gacennau (y Rownd Derfynol) yr wythnos ddiwethaf, ’roedd y menig popty wedi eu tynnu, pan osodwyd her terfynol i’n pobyddion ifanc, sef - Gwaith Pobi Technegol – h.y.cyfle i brofi eu gwybodaeth a'u profiad technegol, a ‘gwahanu'r gwenith o'r us’!  Y cwestiwn oedd - a fuasent yn medru ymateb i'r her?

Denbighshire’s Harry Potter Cake School is the ultimate schools’ baking competition, where passionate young bakers compete to be crowned Denbighshire’s overall ‘Star Baker’.  And, last week, for the first time ever, Denbigh High School welcomed primary and secondary school young bakers to do baking battle.

Throughout the Spring and Summer terms 2017, young bakers in schools across Denbighshire have donned their aprons and proved their baking prowess, creativity and skill, in a bid to reach the Harry Potter Cake School to find the county’s best young baker.

The theme for this year’s competition has been Harry Potter, in honour of the 20th Anniversary publication of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’.  Young bakers have explored and developed purposeful and practical skills and delighted in ‘whipping up’ spellbindingly delicious and healthy baked treats, basing their ‘Showstopper Bakes’ and decorated gingerbread biscuits on favourite delicacies and characters, inspired by JK Rowling’s debut novel.

At last week’s Cake School (Grand Final), the oven gloves were off, when young bakers were set a final challenge - the Technical Bake – testing their technical knowledge and experience, which separated the wheat from the chaff.  Would they rise to the challenge?

Cymerodd Ysgol Caer Drewyn yr anrhydedd yn y categori oedran 7-11 gyda pizza addas ar gyfer Harry, Ron a Hermione, a daeth Ysgol Uwchradd Dinbych yn fuddugol yn y gystadleuaeth 11-14.

Cafodd y ‘Brwydr Pobi’ ei noddi gan A. F. Blakemore & Sons Cyf. a chwmni ‘The Pudding Compartment, Bagillt.  Dyfeisiwyd bob un sialens gan Mrs Teleri Owen, Ysgol Uwchradd Dinbych gyda’r cogydd enwog, Graham Tinsley MBE, yn beirniadu’r gwaith gan blant oedran 11-14.Hefyd fe wefreiddiodd Graham y cogyddion ifanc drwy roi dosbarth meistr pobi.

Felly, beth oedd barn y pobyddion ifanc am eu profiad?  "Rwyf wedi cael diwrnod gwych ac wedi dysgu pethau newydd".  "Rydw i wedi mwynhau'r profiad hwn yn wirioneddol ac mae wedi ennyn mwy o ddiddordeb ynof mewn coginio”.  "Roedd yn gyfle i mi wneud ffrindiau newydd drwy wneud rhywbeth dwi’n ei fwynhau".

Ac aelodau o'r teulu?  "Mae'n brofiad dysgu, gan weithio ochr yn ochr â phlant nad ydynt erioed wedi cwrdd o'r blaen, a rhoi hyder a’u paratoi ar gyfer profiadau yn y dyfodol a allai fod yn debyg". "Fel arfer, yn bennaf, dim ond digwyddiadau chwaraeon sy'n dod ag ysgolion at ei gilydd, felly byddwn i'n cytuno ei bod hi’n braf i ddod â nhw at ei gilydd mewn math o ddigwyddiad gwahanol".

Mae Gwasanaethau Addysg a Phlant Sir Ddinbych  ‘yn falch iawn fod 865 o blant a phobl ifanc o fewn Sir Ddinbych wedi cymryd rhan mewn cystadleuaeth Brwydr Pobi eleni ac eisoes wrthi’n paratoi rhywbeth arbennig ar gyfer pawb ym 2018!

Ysgol Caer Drewyn took the honours in the 7-11 age category with a pizza fit for Harry, Ron and Hermione, whilst Denbigh High School was victorious in the 11-14 competition.

The Cake-Off was sponsored by A. F. Blakemore & Sons Ltd and The Pudding Compartment, Bagillt.  All challenges were devised by Mrs Teleri Owen, Denbigh High School.  Celebrity chef Graham Tinsley MBE judged the 11-14 challenge and thrilled the young chefs with a baking masterclass.

So what did the young bakers think?  “I’ve had a fantastic day and have learnt new things”. “I’ve really enjoyed this experience and it’s made me more interested in cooking”.  “It’s a chance for me to make new friends through something I enjoy”.

And family members?  “It’s a learning experience, working alongside children they have never met before, gives confidence and sets them up for future experiences that may be of a similar situation”.  “It’s mostly sporting events that bring schools together, so I’d agree that it’s nice to bring them together in a different setting”.

Denbighshire Education and Children’s Services’ is delighted that 865 Denbighshire children and young people took part in this year’s Cake-Off competition and is already ‘cooking’ up something special for 2018!

'Campau Cemegol' – Consurio Hud Harri Potter

Campau Cemegol' – drwy consurio hud Harri Potter, mae cystadleuaeth cyfathrebu gwyddonol Menter Cyfoethogi'r Cwricwlwm Sir Ddinbych yn gyfuniad perffaith o lenyddiaeth, chwarae dramatig, gwyddoniaeth a chelf.

Trwy ddefnyddio stori 'Harri Potter a Maen yr Athronydd', ’rydym wedi dewis thema ddeniadol a phoblogaidd a fydd yn helpu i ysgogi disgyblion i ddefnyddio eu dychymyg a'u creadigrwydd i gyfathrebu gwyddoniaeth mewn ffordd ddeniadol, yn gryno ac yn llawn hwyl. Trwy gymryd rhan yn y gystadleuaeth, nid yn unig y bydd disgyblion yn dysgu sut i ateb cwestiynau, efallai y byddant hyd yn oed yn dysgu mwy am eu hunain!

Drwy greu eu ‘Kit Potions’ Harri Potter ei hunain, bydd y disgyblion yn cychwyn ar antur fawr tu hwnt i gyfyngiadau'r cwricwlwm arferol, gan weithio fel tîm o bedwar o wyddonwyr ifanc, gan adeiladu ar eu sgiliau llythrennedd a chyfathrebu. Wrth i’r dewiniaid ifanc greu eu 'potions hudolus' rhyfeddol ei hunain, byddant yn darganfod y wyddoniaeth y tu ôl i  ddewiniaeth gwych Hogwarts, gan ddangos nid yn unig eu sgiliau ymarferol ond hefyd eu pwerau rhesymu gwyddonol a chyfathrebu.

Wrth bennu arddull ‘Dragon’s Den’, bydd y timau yn cael eu gwahodd i rannu eu gwaith mewn cyflwyniad 3 munud i banel o feirniaid a’u grŵp ysgol / flwyddyn gyfan.

‘Chemical Capers’ – conjuring up Harry Potter magic

‘Chemical Capers’ – conjuring up Harry Potter magic, is Denbighshire Curriculum Enrichment initiative’s science communication competition; a perfect combination of literature, dramatic play, science and art.

By using the story of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, we have chosen an attractive and popular theme which will help motivate pupils to use their imagination and creativity to communicate science in an engaging, concise and fun manner. By taking part in the competition, not only will pupils learn how to answer questions, they might even learn more about themselves!

By creating their very own Harry Potter Potions Kit, pupils will embark on a great adventure beyond the confines of the normal curriculum, working as a team of four young scientists, building on their literacy and communication skills.  As young wizards create their own amazing ‘magical potions’, they will discover the wonderful science behind Hogwarts wizardry, demonstrating not only their hands-on skills but also their powers of scientific reasoning and communication.

In a Dragon’s Den style setting, teams will be invited to share their work in a 3 minute presentation to a panel of judges and their whole school/year group.

‘O’r Fath Gyffro’ - Celf a Dylunio

Mae gan Sir Ddinbych tapestri cyfoethog a rhyfeddol o fythau a chwedlau, yn seiliedig yn rhannol ar ddigwyddiadau hanesyddol, wedi’u gosod mewn tirweddau hudolus, llawn o ddreigiau, cewri, gwrachod, dewiniaid, merched hardd a dynion arwrol.  Mae'n rhoi llawer o ysbrydoliaeth gyda'i chaerau, gwrthgloddiau hynafol, bryngaerau, cestyll canoloesol, eglwysi, capeli, ffynhonnau sanctaidd a mannau cysegredig, plastai ysbrydoledig-gothig a thai gwledig diddorol, rhai gyda'u ofergoelion ac amlygiadau arswydus eu hunain, sgerbydau cudd mewn waliau, pobl mewn gwisg Fictoraidd ac hyd yn oed Foneddiges Glas.

Mae’r ‘O’r Fath Gyffro’ yn gystadleuaeth celf a dylunio, gan roi cyfle i gymunedau ysgolion cyfan i ddysgu am hanes, ystyr a phwysigrwydd baneri a dylunio a chreu baner eu hunain, yn gysylltiedig â'u gwaith ar draws y cwricwlwm . Bydd ysgolion yn creu ac yn atodi pethau i’r faner sy'n cynrychioli syniad, neu ddelfryd, sy'n arbennig o berthnasol i'w hysgol a’u hardal. Bydd hyn yn cynnwys cyfeiriadau at hanes lleol, iaith, daearyddiaeth, tirnodau lleol, cymeriadau a nodweddion ffisegol (ee afonydd, mynyddoedd, ac ati).

‘All of a Flutter’ – Art & Design

Denbighshire has an amazingly rich tapestry of myths and legends, based partly on historical events, set in magical landscapes, full of dragons, giants, witches, wizards, beautiful women and heroic men.  It provides lots of inspiration with its forts, ancient earthworks, hillforts, medieval castles, churches, chapels, holy wells and sacred places, gothic-inspired mansions and curious country houses, some with their own spine-chilling apparitions and manifestations, hidden skeletons in walls, people in Victorian dress and even a Blue Lady.

‘All of a Flutter’ is an art and design competition, providing whole school communities the opportunity to learn about the history, meaning and importance of flags and design and create their own, linked to their work across the curriculum.  Schools will create and accessorise a flag that represents an idea, or an ideal, with particular relevance to their school and their locality.  This will include references to local history, language, geography, local landmarks, characters and physical features (e.g. rivers, mountains, etc).

'Harri-oddiad' - Gwneud Ffilmiau a'r Cyfryngau Gweledol

Bydd 'Harri-oddiad' yn galw ar ddarpar wneuthurwyr ffilmiau ifanc yn ysgolion Sir Ddinbych i 'zoomio i mewn' ar eu treftadaeth naturiol a diwylliannol a gwneud eu marc eu hunain ym maes sinematograffi.

Bydd ysgolion yn cael eu hannog i rannu ffilmiau hyrwyddo byr addysgol, ddwyieithog gyda chynulleidfaoedd ar-lein drwy denbighshireenrichment.com (gwefan Cyfoethogi'r Cwricwlwm Sir Ddinbych) a chodi ymwybyddiaeth o harddwch a breuder y byd naturiol fel y gwelir mewn ffocws clir o'u safbwynt personol eu hunain.

‘Harry-tage’ – Film-making and Visual Media

‘Harry-tage’ will call on aspiring young film-makers in Denbighshire schools to ‘zoom in’ on their natural and cultural heritage and make their own mark in the field of cinematography.

Schools will be encouraged to share bite-sized educational, bilingual and promotional films with on-line audiences via Denbighshire Curriculum Enrichment initiative’s website (denbighshireenrichment.com) as part of a big screen back-drop to the Philosopher’s Stone big birthday celebrations and to raise awareness of the beauty and fragility of the natural world as seen in sharp focus from their perspective.

Make room for nature this March!   A daily digital challenge, over 23 days, in March 2017, begins in “the best classroom, roofed only by the sky”, when schools will explore their own ‘Forbidden Forest’, conjure up some exciting extramural chemistry and post their Twitter feeds, not only to raise awareness but also invite their on-line followers into nature to start their own ‘wild’ adventures.  Schools will create magical communities of enquiry based on mutual respect, sound academic, ecological and environmental understanding.

‘Potterin’ About’ will encourage curiosity, patient observation, motivation, concentration, confidence and social/communication skills.

Engaging children and young people in this ‘hands-on’ digital learning experience will foster a love for local wildlife and a sense of responsibility for the local environment.

Students can choose from the following daily activities or make up some of their own:-

  • discover plants with ‘magical or healing’ properties;

  • become garden bird or bird of prey detectives;

  • bird activity ‘mappers’ in the school playground;

  • sky spotters for soaring buzzards, roadside rovers for hovering kestrels, red kite seekers, rare owl observers;
